When the weather allows it the surroundings are great, check out the Storchennest nearby . Currently construction next to the hotel which is a bit too loud in the morning. As for the beds...they are quite stiff and not comfortable at all. The bathrooms are quite good with the exception of a poorly designed shower that makes half the bathroom wet while showering. When you get out of the shower you will be in a small pool of water. The pool area is quite nice however I did not get the chance to swim. Overall not a bad hotel for such a small town.

However, it is pretty with jets and a tree/cave decor. Altmuehlsee is according to me the most beautiful lake in the area. I visited it in winter so I can't say what is a service quality. But it seems to have everything one can need to relax on the beach or enjoy water sports. There is a bicycle path around the whole lake and marked hiking trail.
The only downside is that the spa area is rather small for the number of guests the hotel can accomodate. We were lucky that the hotel was not fully booked when we were there. But even then we had sometimes trouble to find free loungers.
We had a nice two-room suite with a small kitchen. But place was clean and with windows open cool enough to sleep. Ate dinner at the restaurant -- traditional Franconian dishes, delicious. Spa is self-serve but costs; the pool doesn't cost extra but no towels.
